Election Reform

Utah’s current redistricting process is defective and requires reform. The Utah Constitution provides that “all political power is inherent in the people.” However, our current redistricting process undermines this fundamental Utah value because it allows incumbent politicians to gerrymander the redistricting process by selecting the people who vote for them.

Gerrymandering occurs when elected officials manipulate the process for their own personal and political gain at the expense of community interests. Gerrymandering has led to extreme dysfunction in government and a staggering level of distrust among the electorate. Addressing this dysfunction and restoring faith in our representative democracy is the challenge of our time.

Locally, I support the Better Boundaries campaign which is committed to bringing people of all political persuasions together to work toward combating the negative impact gerrymandering has had on Utah’s communities.

As a United States Senator, I will take a stand to eliminate gerrymandering for partisan gain and to restore all political power to the people!

We must also repeal Citizens United. Money has corrupted our political system, and the Citizens United decision was merely the culmination of the gradual monetization of the entire political process. Super PACs should be banned, private donations to politicians and campaigns should be banned, and a clean public financing system should be implemented to end the takeover of our government by corporations and billionaires. Americans deserve free and fair elections — free from the corruption of big money donors.

I will be a staunch advocate for campaign finance reform including disclosure of all PAC donors and publicly-funded elections. We must return the voices to the millions of Americans who have been silenced by the Special Interests of the powerful and wealthy.

  • Pass a constitutional amendment to get money out of politics
  • Pass the constitutional Right-to-Vote
  • Publicly-funded elections
  • Rank-choice voting
  • Deprivatize our election, with audits, paper trails, and enhanced security
  • Create Federal standards to ensure no local government allows a voting system to be vulnerable to external threats
